Home Styles to Consider

Find the Right Fit for Your Next Chapter

Greater Houston has a wide range of easy-living home styles. Here are the ones I’m asked about most.

Active-Adult CommunitiesAge-restricted (55+) neighborhoods often built around a clubhouse, fitness center, pool, walking trails, and a calendar of social activities.
Single-Story HomesEverything on one level: the primary suite, kitchen, laundry, and living space, with no stairs between you and your day.
Patio & Garden HomesDetached homes on smaller lots with a private patio or courtyard, often with yard care handled by the HOA.
Condos & TownhomesShared-wall living where the association typically maintains exteriors and common areas. Look for elevator buildings or ground-floor units if you want to skip the stairs.
Homes With Accessibility FeaturesWider doorways, zero-step entries, curbless showers, grab bars, and lever handles. I’ll help you spot them, or plan for adding them later.
Lock-and-Leave LivingLow-maintenance homes with HOA-maintained exteriors and yards, so you can travel or visit family without worrying about the house.

55+ FAQs

Answers to Common Next-Chapter Questions

What is an age-restricted (55+) community?

It’s a neighborhood where the community’s rules set age requirements for residents, commonly that at least one person in each home is 55 or older. Rules on guests, younger household members, and rentals vary from one community to the next, so I’ll help you review the HOA documents before you make an offer.

What do HOA fees usually cover?

It depends on the community. Fees may cover the clubhouse, pool, fitness center, common-area landscaping, and in some cases front-yard care or exterior maintenance. I’ll get the current fee, what it includes, and the HOA’s rules for every home you’re considering so you can compare clearly.

Can I buy my next home before I sell my current one?

Often, yes. Depending on your finances, options may include a home-sale contingency, a bridge loan, or using savings or equity. A lender can tell you what you qualify for, and I’ll help you weigh the trade-offs of each approach in today’s market.

How will moving affect my property taxes?

Texas offers homestead exemptions, and additional exemptions may be available for homeowners 65 and older or with a disability. How those apply when you move depends on your situation, so check with your county appraisal district and a tax professional before you decide. I’m happy to point you to the right offices.

Can I make my current home work for aging in place instead?

Sometimes that’s the right answer. Updates like grab bars, a curbless shower, better lighting, or a first-floor bedroom can make a big difference. I can connect you with contractors to get estimates, and help you compare that cost against the move.

When is the best time to make a move?

The best time is when it fits your life, not just the market. Many clients start planning several months ahead to leave time for decluttering and repairs. I’ll share what the current Greater Houston market looks like so you can choose a timeline that feels right.
